Advertising in Virtual Worlds is very much flavour of the month at the moment with a steady stream of brands shuffling into Second Life. Some brands are doing it well with thought and creativity, such as Coke , and some slightly less well....
I've been subscribing to the Internet Marketing Voodoo podcast for sometime. There's a new show about once a month and they tend to be meaty and inciteful. I've just listened to Episode 40, Paul Lewis talking to Dr. Jim Bower, CEO of virtual online community Whyville, and it's really worth a listen.
Whyville is a virtual world, founded in
1999 by CalTech biology professor James Bower and it uses a wide variety of
games to teach kids maths, how to manage their money, and even learn how to eat better. It's Second Life for kids!
The podcast is thoroughly engrossing and thought provoking. There are some great examples in here of how advertisers within Whyville are getting it right, combining fun & learning. Particularly impressive is Toyota who as well as being innovative have committed what I suspect is a long term investment in Whyville.
Enjoy..
